Parks and Beaches in Calvert County, Maryland

Calvert County is one of the most picturesque areas in Southern Maryland. Outdoor live is full of parks with stunning landscapes and beaches with gorgeous views of the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River. Both local, state, and private sanctuaries keep the area protected and conserved. You can find many educational centers for learners of all ages. Here a few that aren't to be missed -
PARKS:
BATTLE CREEK CYPRESS SWAMP SANCTUARY
Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary makes an ideal day trip for the young and old alike. The Calvert County Natural Resources Division provides a variety of educational programs and outdoor activities throughout the year.
This state museum of archaeology overlooks the Patuxent River and includes a Visitor & Exhibit Center, Discovery Room, a Native American Village, hiking trails and a canoe & kayak launch. Visitors can spend the day picnicking, biking and hiking. A National Park Service Network to Freedom site.
Pristine 3,000 acre natural area with 22 miles of hiking trails, including interpretive trails and historic structures, community farm and guided canoe trips.
A 260-acre park for environmental education, features picnic shelters, a wetland boardwalk, fishing pier, and launch for kayaks and canoes. Swimming pool and kayak rentals (fees apply).
BEACHES:
BREEZY POINT BEACH + CAMPGROUND
Seated at the heart of the Chesapeake Bay, Breezy Point Beach & Campground is one of Calvert County’s favorite attractions. The sandy shores and gentle surf offer visitors near and far the ultimate Maryland experience. Spend a day at Breezy Point’s pristine beach soaking up the sun, while taking in the gorgeous views. Or, enjoy a serene picnic with loved ones. For fishing and crabbing enthusiasts, there is a 200-foot fishing pier. And for the most adventurous visitors, hunt for shark’s teeth and fossils on the water’s edge.
The massive cliffs, from which Calvert Cliffs State Park was named, dominate the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay for roughly 24 miles in Calvert County. They were formed over 10 to 20 million years ago. It is a day-use park featuring a sandy beach, unique fossils, an accessible recycled tire playground, fishing, a freshwater and tidal marshland and 13 miles of hiking trails.
North Beach has much to offer residents and visitors alike. You can enjoy the sun and the Chesapeake Bay while relaxing on the sandy beach. The boardwalk, lined with blossoming flower beds and dotted with park benches, is very popular among athletes and casual strollers. The fishing pier is a popular spot for those seeking the catch of the day. There are boat slips located at the end of the pier that are free to use. If you're looking for some North Beach swag to take home, the Shirt Shack is the place for you!
For hundreds of years the forces of nature have reshaped the Chesapeake Bay shoreline of Flag Ponds Nature Park, creating a remarkable variety of natural environments--from sandy beach, to freshwater ponds, to the forested heights of Calvert Cliffs. Today, nature continues to play with the sand, changing the park’s landscape with each tide, each storm, each season.
